Can Physician Shadowing Really Boost Your Med School Application?
Can physician shadowing really boost your med school application? This is a question that some pre-med students ask themselves upon studying application requirements. You probably know by now that an excellent undergraduate record, sufficient units in certain science subjects, and a high MCAT score will get you in the priority list among numerous med school applications. But having the experience of shadowing a physician gives the student better insight into the life of a doctor, strengthens his or her decision to become a doctor, and provides stories to tell during the admission interview. Experience in physician shadowing will also avoid instances of writing block, while the applicant comes up with the personal statement.

The experience of physician shadowing
The number of physician shadowing hours will depend on the institution or doctor the student inquires from. The shadowing schedule can go as short as one to two hours to over eight hours a day. During the experience, you must dress well and act professional. Give respect to the physician when it is due and follow their rules, especially regarding patients and interactions with them. Ask the right questions. It helps to do research on the doctor’s specialization and the history of the establishment they are working for. Ask the questions during the right time and don’t ask about inappropriate topics. If the doctor is busy with his or her patients, be polite and patient enough to wait and simply observe. You can use this time to evaluate each situation and gain personal insights. Don’t be afraid to ask the physician for other health care professionals you can talk to about the medical profession.
It will depend on the doctor how involved you will be in their work process. Some may let you talk to patients or explain certain situations as they diagnose. Others may hold back information. It will really depend on the physician, but respect their decision, regardless of what they choose.
Once you are done with the experience, send the doctor a thank you note or gift to show your appreciation. Don’t forget to include it in your resume by indicating when, how long, the clinic or hospital, department, hours shadowed, and the physician’s contact details.
